Car-deer crashes on the rise in Ohio Columbus Dispatch
Thursday, October 4, 2007 12:54 PM
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The peak season for car accidents involving deer has arrived, and Ohio motorists are being warned that those crashes have been on the increase.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says more than 28,000 deer-vehicle collisions were reported on the state's roads last year, up 3.3 percent from 2005.
In a news release issued with the Ohio Insurance Institute and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources on Thursday, the patrol says 12 people were killed last year in wrecks involving deer. That compares with nine fatalities in 2005 and five in 2004.
Officials say most of the crashes come between October and January, when deer are breeding, and during the hours around sunrise and sunset.

I saw that article too, and almost wrote a post on it. I wrote one last November about this issue, as we have a lot of car-deer crashes around where I live.
Hmm, maybe that's a good Safety Friday post. I must ponder this.
There are so many people that don't understand hunters. If it weren't for those of us that hunt the deer, the population would be much more out of hand than it already is. People I work with tease me about hunting and they don't understand why I enjoy it so much. I always try to tell them that in some sense I am helping them out by managing the wildlife population, but most of them still don't understand. Oh well, at least I try to educate them on it.
I went into the office yesterday to have lunch with a colleague. I bumped into a lady there who was talking about seeing more deer the past couple of weeks.
I started to explain that the archery season opened saturday and that deer movement will be on the rise through late November as we get closer to the rut.
It turns out that her ex was big into hunting. She was a big supporter and loved cooking up wild game from deer and grouse to squirrel.
It is always nice to bump into someone who supports us hunters!
Sounds like they need to do more hunting, maybe give people permits for more than one deer. Especially for those little whitetail deer. We don't have whitetails in Utah, it's mulies only here. Most of us who have seen whitetail refer to them as "dogs with antlers".
Dogs with antlers, thats too funny! So are your whitetail out there short or just unusually lightweight? Around here, the big boys can get over 300lbs live weight.
Mulies are on the list I hope to try some day, along with Elk.
We don't have whitetail in Utah, only mulies. All the pictures and heads we see of them look small.
I can't wait until gun deer seasons opens. I only hope one of the two of us gets at least one. Deer jerky is awsome!
